Trumpeters  can  make  quite  a  shadow  when  passing  overhead.

Trumpeters and Cackling geese

White  fronted  geese  moved  in  with  the  trumpeter  swans  this  winter.  Due  to  their  call  the  nickname  is   ' cackling  geese '.

White winged scoter

This  is  a  white winged  scoter.   Not  the  name I  would  have  chosen.  Amazing,  but  these  guys  eat  and  digest  the  whole  clam,...shell  and  all.

Brandt Pair

These  are  Brandt.  Just  one  more  of  the  best  formally  dressed  marine  birds.  

Stellar Jay with cubes

Finally!!  Just  the  right  cloudy  light  so  the  cubes  on  his  back  do  not  wash  out.

Clam  snack  for  the  Scaup.  Good  diet  He  looks  to  be  in  prime  condition.

Looks  like  the  female,  however  I  think  this  is  Redwing  esquire.

Oyster Catcher

Never  saw  one  chase  an  oyster  much  less  actually  catch  one.  I  think  they  need  SPF  50  for  those  pale  pink  legs.

Jumping  for Lunch.   They  got  to  know  me.  It  takes  months.

A  scramble  for lunch  treats.  Not  so  distant  and  aloof  when  food  is  involved.

Now  we  call  these  ' Longtail '.  The  old  squaw  label  is  rude  and  incorrect.

Which  wing span  is  wider?   The  blue  heron  or  the  local  turkey  vulture?

Amazing reflex

This  fellow  is  at  the  far  end  of  a  bench  I  am  sitting  at.   Because  of  a  very  dull  day,  the  shutter  speed  is  quite  slow;  almost  a  double  click.   This  is  an  image  of  the  reflex  to  the  shutter  noise.   Now  that  is   a  fast  response.

This  little  guy  seems  well  pleased  with  himself.

Savannah looks back

Savannah  sparrows  normally  like  to  hunt  and  peck  in  short  grass  farmer's  fields.  I  was  lucky  to  get  this  one  in  the  clear  and  on  a  rock.

Towhee curious

The  cold  snap  seems  not  to  matter  to  this  cheerful  and  curious  towhee.  Looks  a  little  odd  in  this  pose.   Probably  because  his  white  polka-dots  are  not  showing.

Comox Glacier & Snow Wizard

That  is  our  dangerous  glacier  on  the  left,  however,  notice  the  giant  Royal  Snow  Wizard  seated  at  the  mountain  base  on  the  right  side.  He  is  looking  directly  into  the  camera  lens.  Spooky...

Killdeer Colours

 

Seems  to  have  a  little  more  colour  than  the  usual  image.  The  rewards  of  sunlight  at  just  the  best  angle,  I  guess./  The  polarizer  helps  too  of  course.   Two  of  these  healthy  looking  killdeer  were  putting  on  a  performance. They  were  running  towards  each  other  and  making  quite  a  bit  of  noise.
