Savannah looks back
Savannah sparrows normally like to hunt and peck in short grass farmer's fields. I was lucky to get this one in the clear and on a rock.
Towhee curious
The cold snap seems not to matter to this cheerful and curious towhee. Looks a little odd in this pose. Probably because his white polka-dots are not showing.

Comox Glacier & Snow Wizard
That is our dangerous glacier on the left, however, notice the giant Royal Snow Wizard seated at the mountain base on the right side. He is looking directly into the camera lens. Spooky...
This has been uploaded to ePhotozine.com. A wonderful photo website in England where your images are voted on at one vote per person. Wonder what the Brits will think of our Abominable snow men and wizards now?

Killdeer Colours
Seems to have a little more colour than the usual image. The rewards of sunlight at just the best angle, I guess./ The polarizer helps too of course. Two of these healthy looking killdeer were putting on a performance. They were running towards each other and making quite a bit of noise.

Barrows Buddies
The Barrows Goldeneye are always attractive, especially if you can get that colour sheen on their heads. A bright spot during so many dull November days recently. [2012]

Crow Affliction
When I saw this poor fellow I thought it may be a minor blight, but when I saw a similar affliction in a young eagle it clearly looked lethal so decided to alert the authorities.
This may have advanced quickly. due to our unusual long dry summer this year. I hope several days of severe cold this coming winter may limit the advance of this awful scourge.

Eagle Plague
I suggest this young eagle is in agony. The humane thing, [ as per SPCA], would be to put it down out of mercy and bury it to prevent the spread of disease to other birds and creatures who would feed on it. If you see this and ignore it then it will soon drop and the disease will spread. I am not a professional naturalist, have no authority to kill Eagles and do not own a rifle. Thus I only post this to inform those with the authority to do whatever the experts deem wise. I first noticed this growth on three different crows at Lafarge on the Dyke Road, Courtenay Comox BC, near the bird lookout. So far I have informed the Comox Band and the Comox city hall as they know who the local 'experts,
are. I hope this can be stemmed before it spreads. TG

UPDATE:: This information is co-posted in the UK on ePhotoZine.com where.....
Alf85 informs us in Canada that;;-<
I realize ePhotoZine is not a 'birder's' web site, yet I don't think they mind if awareness is spread if it helps stem disease and limits its spread for everyone's benefit. I endevour to keep this fairly minimal.
I will pass on the news from Alf85 that Avian Pox virus is hitting the tit family and spreading in England. Our locals may not be aware of that in Canada..
Not sure where to keep you informed of this without leaning on ePhotoZine. My photo bog I guess
. I will post updates here and mention a more official site where the topic is covered when and if I learn more. TG ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Eagle Play
I prefer to see eagles enjoying life. Let us hope that orange growths on eagles and crows is a rare and fleeting affliction.

Mini-Snap in Cumberland
A mini snap of some kind discovered in Cumberland BC. Probably just a garden variety carried and planted by birds.

Dragon Exhaust Cone
As promised, this is the exhaust cone in flight photo. A direct influence of the Military jet airbase here in Comox BC. An image for Ripley's no doubt. Bets could be won here.............
I never use PhotoShop. Only the edit pgm that comes with Kodak's ESP7 printer. In other words, my jpegs are real. TG

Red Dragon Lady
Red dragon lady because obviously she has forgotten to shave her legs. From the dock at Lazo Marsh in Comox.
Dragon flight from above
Looking down off the dock a Lazo marsh. These large blues were playing tag, making it very difficult to get inflight shots.
Dragon Blue Aloft
This went well this morning. Finally getting some in flight Dragons. Surprising to see a jet assist cone on the backside.
I will upload a rearward shot that shows what seems like a jet exhaust cone. Must be Comox military air force influence.

Downy Pecker
They tell me this is a downy.
Is that correct?
Guess I should look it up but time is pressing right now.

Bee Thinking
He hovered a bit as though thinking so I snapped him as a reflex action. Glad it turned out well. Not planned at all.
Bloom and Bud
This is a bloom that grows on a medium size tree. Taken at an old truck garden farm that once fed loggers and miners in Cumberland years ago. This may not be all that common. I don't know the name of it. Do you?
Buck nibbles fruit tree buds
This is the same buck munching buds on a fruit tree in Comox. Antlers in velvet are not always even.
Deer is quizzical
Deer in Comox are sometimes odd. This one seems to ask... Do I know you ? I thought he may leave stage left, but he just turned and started nibbling on fruit tree buds.
PS: Don't mind the nipped antler. The buck felt no pain. I should have waited for that right ear to show though.

Killdeer..broken wing faker
Notice the peculiar feathering along the wing edge. Cloudy day fails to bring out the eye luster. Still, not a bad image.

Flicker & Dark Head
Flicker normally have a light grey head. Not sure why this one is so dark. Some bird pro on ePhotoZine.com will probably have an answer for this. There are Flicker close-ups earlier in this blog for comparison. TG
Owl and Crab meat
This is a more normal view of the owl's face. He sure is happy to chow down on crab meat. The robins were hounding him but he didn't do much except to move off to another branch. The light in this dark bush is next to impossible. TG
Owl Dinner [Lobster?]
The owl was eating what seemed like a small lobster. The
Robins were raising a big noisy fuss and followed the owl
with his supper as the owl tried to evade them. This 'fuss' drew in other curious birds. Piliated woodpecker,
Downy, Western Tananger, Chipping sparrow and Bewick Wren. TG

Damselfly Blues
Blues because there were several of these new hatchlings flying about. About 1/3 the size of an adult. Sewing needle size. See the two tiny diamonds in the wing tips?

Kingfish seriously
Kingfish on the gunnel with black hull and wharf background.
Seriously drowsy on this hot afternoon.

Kingfish Cooling
In this not so flattering image, Kingfish shows us his diving lens and how he cools down in the hot sun with mouth open.
Kingfish on Rope
Kingfish lounges for a 3pm afternoon rest on the luxurious mooring rope for a black yacht. Thus the background.

Mafia X Three
These guys just blew in looking tough as they wait to approach waste salmon parts left over from smoking salmon steaks. There will be salmon theft.
Waxwing..Mr Slick & Dandy
This is the Cedar Waxwing at normal high alert 99% of the time, yet occaisionally they do relax and fluff up to groom and primp as the next post will prove. Love those red wing dots. Who designs these birds anyway? Wow!
Waxwing Fluffed and Relaxed
Waxwings are fairly high strung and alert birds. This cedar
wax ham is annoyed with my proximity [ raised crown ], but he
is oddly at ease, fluffing and grooming at the same time.
You can see the red wing dots and yellow dipped tail.
Normally they are tightly feathered, sleek and ready for
flight. TG

Finch, cloud and rain
Here is the same finch at a different angle. Almost looks like a different bird. Here you can see the falling rain as white spots and streaks. Of several shots only a few had any eye highlights. TG
Finch in Rain
Went out in the grey rain this morning with the intent to get an image. Did a little better than expected. Mr. Red made only one visit for sunflower seed but stayed long enough for several photos. Had to dial up light level a bit so the greyed wood and seed are washed out. Not a fatal loss. TG

Sunrise Red
I have no idea about what causes this much red on a cold January morning. Looks a little low on the left. This faded away very quickly. My thinking is slow on a cold January am or I may have taken a few more exposures. TG

Lion Senior
This old bruiser has a main up over the head and notice the grizzled white on the forehead and muzzle. Big mouth on his left has that senior cap as well.

Kingfish snack fly - by
This is the almost good inflight Kingfisher image. He had just caught a small lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll....snack.
Iris au Rootbeer
Rootbeer Iris is what we call this type in Comox marine park. Ocean winds make them ragged in fairly quick time.
Comox British Columbia Canada, that is.
Comox British Columbia Canada, that is.
Green Violet Swallow
This swallow comes and goes on each half hour approximately. Patience required. It took several tries before I got this half decent in flight shot.
Swallow Green Violet
Green Violet swallows are not that common. This is the first I have seen . Tree swallows, barn swallows and purple martins have a more simple colour scheme. These are white breasted not yellow. That colour is a reflection from grasses below.
Driftwood galore on Goose Spit
There has been a long line or wall of logs driven into the beach to limit weather washout. Looks good and there is a vast collection of driftwood along that wall.
Fish Design Delicate & Artistic
Notice the intricate design of this salt water two inch fingerling. The fine pattern along the back, and the sunny yellow upstrikes over dotted sides. He was caught in the rocks on a falling tide. Birds usually make these stranded fish vanish before 10 AM.
Shark Fish ?
Walk the beach early in the morning and you may find odd fish before they vanish down a bird,s gullet. This seems to be a mix of shark or dogfish, a bit of sturgeon and part mudpout.

Merganser kiddies
A Picasa processing gamble. This was overexposed in an early Kodak point and shoot camera. Wild but interesting.
